Venice - An Insight Into The History Of Venice
Venice - An Insight Into The History Of Venice
by JAMES BURROWS
The tale of the city of Venice began in the 5th century AD when refugees from invasions of the Lombard invaders sought safety on the largely uninhabited islands. The communities organized themselves under a doge, flourished as the islets were located favorably for handling seaborne trade between East and West, and by the 9th century they had formed the city of Venice.
By the 10th century, Venice gained supremacy over the most of the coast of Dalmatia, got control of the Adriatic, and began building up its eastern empire. Venetian art and architecture manifested the influence of the Middle East, particularly Byzantium, which is most clearly visible in Saint Mark's Church located on the city's principal square.
Venice became a major maritime power by the 13th century and spread its influence over northern Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. Venice became the “queen of the seas,” reaching the acme of its power by the 15th century. It became the city of rich trade, especially as the main link between Europe and Asia.
The city scaled the peak of magnificence during the Renaissance when the architects like the Lombardo family, Jacopo Sansovino, and Palladio, and the Venetian school of painting that included the giants, such as Titian, Tintoretto, Giovanni Bellini, Jacopo Palma (Palma Vecchio), and Verones created the opulent treasure of majestic churches and palaces on the city floating on water, blazing with colors and lights.
The palaces that embellish La Repubblica Serenissims were built when the Venice ruled a maritime empire that dominated the eastern Mediterranean. The serenity of Republic was followed by rapacity, the most popular in the seizure of the four bronze horses from the Constantinople that are on the display in St. Mark’s Basilica.
However, the power and pelf of the city of Venice began declining in the later half of the 15th century. The discovery of America in 1492 and of the Cape of Good Hope route to Asia in 1498 really transferred commercial power to Spain and other nations to the west of Italy. Yet, Venice continued to be a proud and lavish city.
Turkish Empire took Crete, one of Venice’s historical lands and the whole of the Peloponnesus area in 17th century. The political power of Venice was severely damaged, but there was increase in the arts and literature in the city that resulted in the creation of works of art by Pietro Longhi, Tiepolo, and Canova and to theatre plays by Carlo Goldoni. Napoleone Bonaparte conquered Venice in 1797, the Republic declined in the Eighteenth century, and Venice was ruled first by France and then the Habsburgs before lastly joining the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
Also known as La Serenissima, Venezia, Queen of the Adriatic, the present Venice is an exquisite city built on one hundred and seventeen small islands. Venice is rightly dubbed as “City of Water”, “City of Bridges”, as the city is home to one hundred and fifty canals connected by an astonishing four hundred and nine bridges. One of the most romantic cities of the world, Venice is a popular tourist destination known for several remarkable edifices, squares, bridges, canals, gondolas, and impressive display of the bronze works, tapestries and paintings from the 5th and 6th century.

Electrifying! London's musicals
Electrifying! London's musicals
by ELISHA BURBERRY
Short weekends away always seem like such a good idea – to leave behind habits and habitats, see something new; perhaps listen to something different. But without an aim, weekends away can sometimes fall a bit flat, a case of traipsing around a large city, sporadically darting into shops and recognising monuments. This might be fine if you are happy to go with the flow, but if you prefer being busy and ‘doing’ something then theatre breaks can be a great option.
Although you could always fly to Europe, why bother? There is plenty of talent and tinsel much closer to home in London, plus you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint, which is one less thing to feel guilty about. A cosmopolitan capital full of verve and energy, London has something for everyone with a fantastic mixture of the historic and modern, high and low culture, exclusive restaurants and ‘greasy spoons’; its appeal will never fade although your energy might.
Famously, London also boasts a wealth of theatres, most of which are clustered in the West End - a place in which life seems to become a little rosy and everything turns out well in the end; or at least if not, you can get caught in emotive moments and feel a slightly better person. After a hard week in the office it is refreshing to inhale a little of this magic – buying into moments where life is in tune or exalted, despite real-life appearances to the contrary. Plays abound on the West End, from classics by Beckett and Mike Leigh, to intriguing performances such as Absurdia, a celebration of British Absurdist theatre.
But for luxurious, light-hearted entertainment during a London theatre break most people turn to musicals. These can be anything from the heart-wrenching tragedy of Les Misérables to the rollerblading wonder that is Starlight Express. But fans of rock and roll, doo-wap and men and women in tight leather will only be interested in one option – Grease. Taking the world by storm in the 1970s, this musical has never ceased to impress, transferring with consummate ease to the silver screen. Featuring a handsome John Travolta and an impossibly skinny Olivia Newton-John, the film went on to be nominated for an Oscar.
Most people will have a small space in their heart reserved for Grease, no matter what age they are, or indeed what gender. It is one of those family-friendly films that transcend generations; equally the musical is suitable for all ages. The ease and liveliness of Rydell High is infectious, the late 1950s costumes desirably retro, and the songs so catchy that you’ll be singing in your seats.
Clouds, Mighty Without Movement - Original Oil Paintings
Clouds, Mighty Without Movement - Original Oil Paintings
by ARTERY GALLERY
Renowned Italian artist Alberto Bertoldi has prepared over 30 personal exhibitions across his homeland and now for the first time, he has been introduced to the UK through Artery Gallery, based in St Andrews and Crieff in Scotland.
Bertoldi’s art is fascinating and beautiful since his subject, the sky and the clouds, is equally fascinating and beautiful. Alberto explains, “I was flying on a plane, and as it broke through the clouds, I experienced a most incredible moment. While I was looking out of the window, the plane seemed to hang between the sea and infinity, between sky and earth. With extreme emotion I watched what humans three thousand years ago could only imagine.
When I reached my destination, I dared to watch the horizon again, now from the tiny beach of St Vincente, and I realized for the first time the clouds, mighty, without movement or speed, act like curtains. I witnessed how this curtain of clouds hid the endless universe and its sound.”
Alberto Bertoldi was born in Torino in 1955. He started painting from an early age and besides a brief spell at the Academy of Arts in Brera, is largely considered a self taught artist. Alberto held his first exhibition at the age of 18 though shortly after suspended his painting for a long period of time. Upon reaching 33 years of age, Alberto returned to his work, in complete solitude, with intense work and studying various subjects. Now, differently to his earlier subjects, he looked towards the ancient artists of Northern Europe that were closer to his propensity for landscape painting and, in general, for the aesthetic of sublime.
To view the work by Alberto Bertoldi, log on to the Artery Gallery website at www.arteryuk.com/artists/Bertoldi,Alberto/ or email enquiries@arteryuk.com
New work by Alberto will be arriving end of September, early October 2007.

A Guide To Beijing China: 10 Things To Do In Beijing
A Guide To Beijing China: 10 Things To Do In Beijing
by JAMES BURROWS
You might be envisioning picture Beijing as the city under the rigid reign of Communist Party of China, but it’s completely a changed city now. It’s a metropolis that is all set to host the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Chinese capital certainly is a city worth visiting. You can do a myriad of things in Beijing; here are top 10 things that you can do in Beijing!
Certainly, the very first thing you can do in Beijing is to see the famous Tiananmen Square, which is one of the major attractions of Beijing. Located at the center of Beijing City, Tiananmen Square is a large square, originally constructed in 1417 in the Ming Dynasty (1368 A.D. - 1644 A.D.). Here, you can spectate Tiananmen Tower, Monument to the People's Heroes, Great Hall of the People, Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, and the national flag raising ceremony.
Obviously, visiting the Forbidden City (Gu Gong in Chinese) is the second important thing to visit. Onetime the imperial palace of Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Forbidden City now houses the Palace Museum. Located in the center of Beijing, to the north of Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City is rectangular in shape and covers 74 hectares of area. It has served as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government. Its construction was started in 1407 in the 5th year of the Yongle reign of the third emperor of the Ming family. It was finished fourteen years later in 1420.
The Great Wall Of China in Beijing is a “must visit” site. One of the wonders of the world, the wall is the most illustrious tourist attractions of China. The wall runs zigzagging across deserts, grasslands, mountains, and plateaus, about 6,700 kms from east to west of China. The wall, construction of which began in the Warring States Period on 7th century B.C, has over 2,500 years old history.
After a tiring site seeing session, you can have a highly enjoyable and relaxing foot massage and/or pedicure etc. from any of the professionals offering the service in central Beijing. The service is available for a fraction of the price in the West. It is also available in most of Beijing hotels.
Next, you can visit Temple of Heaven, located south east of Qianmen and the Tiananmen Square. The temple was the site where the emperor used to pray every year for good harvests and fair weather. Surrounded by a huge public park, the temple is beautiful sight. You can enjoy strolling in this lovely green place, home to many ancient trees. Just a short stroll away from the historical sights, you can reach peaceful woods, amazingly, solitude, especially toward the West Gate.
Located the eastern side of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, the National Museum of China is the place that you can visit. The museum features the marvelous collection of things of arts and olden times of China. It is a four-storied building with two proportioned wings, running over 300 meters north and south beside the eastern side of Tiananmen Square. The museum is maintained by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China.
You can also visit Yonghegong, also known as Lama Temple or Palace of Peace. Constructed by the Chinese emperors who harbored a deep fascination for the Tibetan (Tantric) version of Buddhism, the temple is famous for its 18m statue of Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood. The temple has been the home to many Tibetan and Mongolian monks, who lived and taught here.
You can also visit the Beijing Zoo, situated to the west of the city. The zoo has great collection of animals, such as golden monkey, the giant pandas, polar bears, kangaroos and many others. The zoo covers up an area of over 50,000 sq mts and has more than 30 big hallways. The zoo is set in rich scenery of trees, hills and lakes, beside an inland waterway, which flows all the way to the Summer Palace. Additionally to its public education task, it is a well-known center of zoological research and conservation, inclosing several breeding programs.
Beijing certainly has plenty; you can visit lot more sites, such as Summer Palace, Beihai Park, Prince Gong's Mansion, Legation Quarter, Fragrant Hills, Beijing Botanical Gardens, Hutongs, Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution, China Aviation Museum, The Museum of History and the Museum of the Revolution, The Confucius Temple, St Joseph Church, etc.
So, if you are finished with your site seeing, you can enjoy Shooting Chinese Automatic Guns and other crazy military grade weapons at the International Shooting Range in the north of Beijing.
After a tiring day touring, a Beijing opera at the Laoshe Tea House near Qianmen station is good choice to relax in the evening. It’s always good to book a seat in advance, since the place is always crowded. You can also have some relaxing time at Spa Complex. It has a huge sauna, 3 different kinds of spas to soak in, a steam room, and showers.

Discovering the Secrets of Stratford upon Avon
Discovering the Secrets of Stratford upon Avon
by ADAM SINGLETON
Short weekend holidays are becoming a popular way to get away from it all while you wait for that week or two you’ve booked off from work. Whether you’re making the most of a bank holiday weekend or simply taking an extra day or so off from your job, Stratford upon Avon is the ideal destination because it looks stunning and has lots to offer visitors – whatever the English weather decides to throw at you.
Perhaps the most popular sights to see on long weekends in the area are the Shakespeare properties. You can go four hundred and fifty years back in time to visit the house where Shakespeare was born, and enjoy a leisurely journey in and around the area to visit the other four houses which are open to the public, including that of his wife - the picturesque Anne Hathaway’s cottage.
You can also take a stroll through the town itself and wander along the straight streets that first came into being over eight hundred years ago. You may also see the Holy Trinity church, which marks Shakespeare's final resting place.
Stratford upon Avon is also home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, and regular performances of his plays draw in many tourists every single year.
But whether you are a fan of William Shakespeare or not, you’ll still find plenty to do on weekend breaks to the area. If you want to spend a few days unwinding and enjoying the best that England’s countryside has to offer, a walk along the winding River Avon as it passes through Stratford upon Avon is just the ticket to while away an hour or two.
There are several reasons for the popularity of Stratford upon Avon, apart from the obvious connection with William Shakespeare. Its stunning architecture and scenery set it apart as a classic example of a location that brings history into the present day and blends it seamlessly with more modern buildings. It is an extremely popular destination for people all over the world, not to mention Britons looking for somewhere relaxing to escape from the fast paced world we live in.
Stratford upon Avon also appeals to most people due to the versatility of places to stay. Whether you’d like to pitch a tent in the nearby Cotswolds, or stay in a traditional country inn near the town itself, you’re bound to find the perfect hideaway to use as a base for your long weekend break.

5 Tips For People Who Are Considering Being An Expatriate
5 Tips For People Who Are Considering Being An Expatriate
by DONALD SAUNDERS
Every year many thousands of people decide to move overseas permanently and to start a new life for themselves in a foreign country. For a lot of these people this will prove to be one of the best decisions they have ever made, but for a large number of other people their dream quickly turns into a nightmare. Below are a few of the many things that you will have to consider.
Make sure that you really do wish to live overseas permanently.
It is a simple fact that the grass is always greener on the other side and it is all too easy to imagine a heavenly picture of living in the country of your choice. However, once you arrive, you might well discover that in fact the grass is much greener back at home. It is also generally the case that your thoughts about a foreign country as a holidaymaker is quite different from your view as a resident.
Not only should you visit the country a number of times before you make any decision to live there, but you should also do so at differing times of the year and for increasing periods of time. You should also try to 'live' in the country by renting a house or apartment and living as far as is possible as you would be living as a resident and not as a holidaymaker. If you still think that moving is the correct choice after you have spent a few months or so 'living' in the country, thenthere is a pretty good chance that you would not come to regret your decision.
Make sure that you fully understand the immigration rules for your chosen country.
Check on the present immigration policy of your chosen destination and also look at its immigration history and any published or rumored plans for change.
In most cases you will be required to meet strict visa requirements and some of these may be inconvenient, costly and leave you without much security. The very last thing you want to do is to sever your ties with home, buy a condominium and settle the children into school only to discover that you are not allowed to extend your visa and are given three days to get out of the country.
 Examine your finances carefully.
Think very carefully about how you intend to support yourself in your chosen country. Do you, for instance, plan to look for a job after you arrive to provide you with an income, or do you plan to fund yourself from saving, investments or a pension from home?
If you want to look for a job abroad then how simple is it going to be to find a job? If you are able to get a job, what sort of salary can you expect? Will they allow you to work at all? Many countries will require you to have a work permit and these are often issued only in exceptional circumstances or for employment requiring specific qualifications or skills. In a lot of cases your visa will specifically state that you may not seek employment.
If you are going to fund yourself from sources back home, do you have sufficient resources not merely for today but for the next five or ten years or beyond? For instance, if you are going to be taking a pension abroad will it keep pace with the rising cost of living? In many countries you are allowed to draw a pension abroad but, if you elect to do so, you will lose any cost of living increases and your pension is fixed at the level at which you begin to receive it abroad.
Think about what to do with your assets back home.
If you own your own home do you intend to rent it out, sell it or merely leave it sitting empty? What do you intend to do with your car, furniture and other personal belongings?
Naturally your home is a great deal more than a mere asset as it also provides you with a link to your home country and gives you an address back home which might be very useful if you do not have friends or family who would be happy for you to use their address. Just wait until your credit card runs out and your bank informs you that they can only send your replacement card to the address to which the account is registered in your home country.
As far as your other belongings are concerned you could of course get rid of many of them if you wish, retaining only those or especial real or sentimental value, or you might decide to take them with you. But how simple is it to ship things overseas and how much will it cost? Look carefully too at the regulations in your chosen country. Some countries will allow you to bring more or less whatever you wish into the country, while others will have very strict limits or charge high import taxes. For example, in many cases it is far cheaper to buy a new car than to ship your own car and pay high import duty and possibly to need to have your car altered to satisfy local requirements for registration.
 Examine the provision of healthcare.
You might feel fit and healthy now but, if you are considering moving abroad permanently, then a time is going to come when you will have to make use of the local healthcare facilities. Just how good are the local facilities and how well do they stand up against the facilities that you are accustomed to?
Yet another extremely important factor is the provision of public healthcare. If you come from a country which has publicly funded healthcare, like the United Kingdom, then you may be more than a bit shocked by the cost of medical treatment when you are residing in a country that has only private healthcare. Of course, if you are used to paying for private healthcare, you might be very pleasantly surprised to discover that you can get the same or better medical treatment at a fraction of the cost.
No matter what the case, healthcare is something that you will have to look at very carefully and you will certainly want to have some sort of expatriate health insurance plan.
This short list of only five tips is far from exhaustive but it will hopefully provide you with a starting point and get you going in the right direction. Becoming an expat is a huge step and one that requires considerable and careful thought. Donald Saunders writes on many subjects, in particular health, and is also himself an expat. Does your Health Insurance Go the Extra Mile When you Travel
Does your Health Insurance Go the Extra Mile When you Travel
Author: Will
International travel can be an exciting adventure, provided you are aware of the need for travel health insurance. You need to be aware that travel can, and does throw up any number of unpredictable situations.
Probably the most serious risk is the chance of an accident or illness occurring while you are overseas. Requiring emergency medical care, while in another country can be not only inconvenient but extremely problematic as well, if you do not have the right cover.
First of all, there is an unfamiliarity associated with being in a foreign country, with a completely different culture and a different medical system, which can intensify the already problematic issue of being in an accident or requiring any other kind of emergency medical help.
Trying to communicate with people in a different language is enough of an effort, without factoring in the currency conversions, international claims administration of the country of travel, and the time difference. If this is to be further complicated by a lack of insurance cover, one might find oneself totally lost, and “at sea”.
Whether you are residing in or visiting the US, your travel may throw up challenges for your existing healthcare cover. Both brief trips and extended vacations and relocation expose you to health risks not covered by your existing, domestic medical insurance.
Sometimes, tourists and immigrants, even regular business travelers, overlook the need for travel health insurance, simply assuming that their medical plan provides enough coverage. However, as a rule, never leave home without extra, supplementary travel health insurance.
Ask the travel agent who does your bookings, the financial institution you deal with regularly, or your doctor for references and suggestions. Supplemental travel health insurance is a must.
It is not wise to rely on your domestic health plan to cover sicknesses or injuries while you are in the US. In the worst case scenario, the policy might be useless in the US, in the best; it may only cover a small portion of the expenses.
Some international credit card companies now make it a part of their services to offer travel health insurance to their cardholders. Check with your card company; don’t just assume that coverage is included.
The card alone may not provide adequate health coverage. Some of these companies will charge a fee for travel insurance coverage; others may require you to pay for your travel using that particular credit card. In any case, make sure you know the conditions, requirements, and limitations of the provided cover before you leave for the US.
Available travel health insurance policies include short and long-term plans, as well as individual & group plans for international travelers, international students to the US, traveling business executives and even foreign missionaries.
Always carry the proof of insurance cover with you, and leave a copy with someone at home, in case of emergencies. Tell your travel agent, or a friend or family member, as well as your traveling companion how to get in touch with your insurer, in case you are incapacitated.
Anyone traveling outside their country of citizenship needs to be adequately covered by ample travel health insurance, regardless of where you are traveling to, and this is especially true of foreign nationals who are traveling to the USA.
From the basic set of vaccinations to emergency medical care, whatever the situation is, a good travel health insurance policy can give you complete peace of mind, on your trip to the US.
India Holidays at Chenab Valley

The River Chenab originates in the Kulu and Kangra districts of the Himachal Pardesh province of India. The two chief streams of the Chenab - the Chandra and the Bhaga - rise on opposite sides of Baralcha pass at an elevation of about 16,000 feet. These join at Tandi in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 9,090 feet above mean sea level. Fed by innumerable tributaries on the long
journey from its headwaters, the river gains immense power and momentum on entering the Jammu andKashmir region above Kishtwar.
From Kishtwar to Thathri (about 50 km) the Chenab runs through class V and VI gorges. The combined streams, traversing about 135 miles, take a sharp turn along Pir Panjal near Kishtwar. The Chenab then flows along the northern base of the Pir Panjal range before entering the Doda area of Jammu and Kashmir. It cuts across this range through a spectacular gorge and then flows along its southern base, before flowing southwards and entering the plains. After traversing about 400 miles of mountainous regions and flowing at nearly 39 feet per mile, the Chenab opens out into the plains near Akhnur. It enters Pakistan through the Sialkot district, near Diawara Village.

Taste an Empanada With Pork Filling
Taste an Empanada With Pork Filling
Author: Stephen Morgan
I have written several articles on the empanada. Basically these articles all said the same thing about how it is really a meal in itself and you can add a multitude of filling. Well today the filling we are going to look at is a fairly basic pork recipe that actually is delicious.
So the ingredients we would need would be as follows:
20 g of fresh yeast or 1 teaspoon of easy blend dried (active dry) yeast.
350 g of strong white flour.
125 g of corn meal,, “masa harina” or finely ground “polenta”.
½ tbsp salt
Generous 1/3 cup of white wine.
50 g of lard or vegetable fat.
8 tablespoons of olive oil
1 medium egg, lightly beaten
Water to bind the dough
1 medium egg, lightly beaten to seal and glaze the Empanada.
Again the name of the game here is preparation. Take the yeast with about three tablespoons of hand-hot water and mix it all together to a paste. Take the flour and corn meal and pour into a large bowl and add the salt, the wine, the lard the olive oil, the egg and the yeast paste and add enough water to make it all come together into a soft but not too sticky dough.
Still this mixture well and then start to pull it together with your hands. If there is any dried flower left in the bowl and add a touch more to bring it all together. The thing to remember here is if the dough is too dry it would be too difficult to roll out thinly later on.
Take the dough and knead it together for a couple of minutes until it is smooth and well mixed. Then take the dough put it back into a bowl and cover with cling film or plastic wrap. The important bit here is that you should let the dough rise for at least an hour or until it has doubled in size.
Decide upon what filling you want to include within the empanada and bring everything together. Take out half of your dough and roll it out until it's about approximately 5 mm thick. Oil your baking sheet and lay this dough on top of it.
Now we turn on attention to getting the filling and in this particular case looking to take a fairly basic pork filling. For our purposes here we are going to need the following ingredients:
150 ml of olive oil
450 g pork loin cuts into fine strips
4 onions finely sliced
1 Red Pepper
1 Green Pepper
2 Garlic cloves – crushed
1 tbsp sweet smoked paprika
½ tsp dried oregano
2 tbsp tomato puree (in paste form)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper.
As with all these recipes thing you do is heat your olive oil and take this and add your pork strips. Now be sensible here and don’t add them all at once and allow them to brown slightly and then when ready take them and remove them from the pan.
In much the same way that you cook the pork strips cook the onion in the same way; that is to say gently until the onion is itself almost transparent or has a slight golden touch to it.
Next up is to add the peppers to the onion and continue cooking until these too are also soft. Re introduce the pork strips and take the paprika and the garlic and add these to the mixture and cook for a while so that the ingredients start to blend in with each other and then add the oregano and the tomato purée.
Finally season with salt and pepper to taste.
Next take your filling and spread the filling evenly leaving about a 2 cm margin around the age of the dough. Brush the edge of the dough with a little beaten egg.
Take the rest of you at the road at approximately the same size as your original piece and lay this on top of your filling. Take the top and the bottom pieces of dough and start to pinch the edges together and then twist the dough over to make a rope like texture around the edge.
Take the remainder of your beaten egg and brush this all over the empanada and then take a fork and pierce the top of the empanada all over with little holes.
Leave the empanada to rest for about 10 minutes and then leak this in a halt often for between 20 to 30 minutes or depending on your oven the crust is really crisp and golden.
An Introduction to Places to Stay in Northern Spain and Galicia
An Introduction to Places to Stay in Northern Spain and Galicia
Author: Scott James
All forms of tourist accommodation can be found in Galicia and Northern Spain. Accommodation can be found that will fit all forms of budgets and even the most particular tourists will find something to suit their particular needs.
If it is luxury that you are after then the best advice should be to head straight for the exclusive hotels and “Paradors” but to be honest even the basic family “casas rurales” are extremely good value for money. The region is dotted with mountain refuges with stunning views not to mention that in the coastal areas you can find quite a few campsites.
The standard of accommodation in the area is extremely high as you would expect from Galicia and Northern Spain. The categorisation for the hotels is awarded on a star system and these are allocated by the regional tourist authorities. If you need actual visible proof of the standard of your hotel you can find confirmation indicated by a small blue plaque near the hotel front door.
You can usually find en-suite bathrooms or at least a shower in each Hotel bedroom. Do not expect to find en-suite facilities in the smaller Hostels and “Pensiones” but you might be surprised in certain cases.
Don't equate the number of stars on the outside door of the hotel to necessarily match the standards of the accommodation that is on offer and this is because in Spain the stars are allocated on the facilities on offer not necessarily the quality of the service. The more exclusive hotels offer all kinds of extra facilities, such as air conditioning, on-site parking, internet-access and rooms with televisions as well as facilities for the disabled.
The cost of accommodation as in most cases varies from season to season therefore it is wise to plan in advance. A popular option available in all of the autonomous regions of northern Spain are hostels (hostales) and guest houses (pensiones) which are cheaper than hotels. These are usually establishments that can only offer a few beds and by and large are family-run.
There are in excess of 1,500 hotels with a total of 92,000 beds registered in the territory of “Green Spain” -- the Atlantic regions of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque country.
Grupo Sol-Melia and NH are the biggest chain of hotels in the area. Their facilities are of a high standard and include internet-access amongst other features. Latterly there have been a growing number of smaller privately run hotels that offer memorable relaxing accommodation available.
In Spain they have dotted throughout the country a series of state run hotels that are known as Paradors. These are classified from between three to five stars. The first Parador opened in 1928 and there is now quite a comprehensive network throughout the country. The theory behind them was that they should never be more than a day's drive from one to another. In Santiago de Compostela you can find possibly the best known Parador in the area and this is the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos. Other Paradors can be found in Castles, Monasteries and various other monuments’. You will quite often find that there are a growing number of purpose built Paradors and these can quite often be found in either towns of historic interest or areas of spectacular scenery.
The local Parador might not be best hotel in town but it will usually deliver a predictably consistent standard of comfort. The standard from each Parador to Parador very rarely varies with comfortable spacious bedrooms to be found throughout. Some also offer fine regional cuisine. It is usually wise to plan ahead and book your accommodation if you wish to use the network of Paradors. Bookings can be made either using the Central de Reservas which is a centrally based service based in Madrid or you can contact each Parador direct. Rates can be expensive it is worth looking for special deals especially in the high season but to be brutally honest this has to be the same anywhere you go.
Try a Glorious Empanada With a Tuna Filling
Try a Glorious Empanada With a Tuna Filling
Author: Stephen Morgan
Today we are going to take a look at an Empanada, a Galician Flat Pie but in this case we are going to add a Tuna filling to it.
The thing about an empanada is that once you have got the concept just right and you've managed to get the texture and the flour correct for the crust then you can add almost anything to it that you like. It really is one of the most versatile things going and is as it was originally designed, a meal in itself.

150 ml of olive oil
4 onions finely sliced
1 red pepper or finely sliced
1 green pepper or finely sliced
1 teaspoon sweet um smoked paprika
170 g of canned tuna in olive oil
Salt
3 hot boiled eggs (optionally sliced or diced)
Take the olive oil and heat it in a frying pan and then add the onions and fry until the onions are nice, soft and golden looking - almost transparent in fact.
Next add the peppers and gently fry, in fact the longer and more gently you fry these ingredients the better as you'll end up with a much sweeter and more delicious result.
Take this mixture sprinkle the paprika on top and stir in the tuna and cook for a further two minutes. At the end of this remember season to taste if you think you need to. At the end of this if you are going to use the eggs and you don’t have to but if you are then slice them or dice them and lay them gently on top of the tuna filling that you've already put into the empanada and then follow the instructions below.

If you are looking for an out of this world experience then you must visit the Museum of World Treasures in Kansas. Many tourists have just happened upon this gem of a museum and sung its praises to the point that it is a recommended vacation destination even if you aren't in the area! When you walk in you will be greeted by the skeleton of an albertosaurus and until you leave the museum you won't stop being amazed at all there is to see. One aspect kids love is the castle recreated with monsters and even a dungeon! Some of the other fun aspects include original documents and even pictures from American patriots, European royalty, war, presidents, and more. There are even ancient artifacts on display.
This is perhaps America's most interesting museum not to mention the most exciting. There are 10 dinosaurs on display that were alive once upon a time as well as two royal mummies from Egypt. Other amazng displays include exhibits from many of the US wars including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, both World Wars, Vietnam, Korea, and more. There are even exhibits on Hollywood Stars, the Wild West, musician and sports stars. And, if that is not enough to get your attention, there is also a puppet theater, moon walk, and more for the kids. There is so much to do and see at this museum that every American should take the time to visit and see all that is on display. It truly is impressive and very educational.
Kids under four years old get in free and adult tickets cost $8.95. Senior tickets are $7.95 and kids are $6.95. The museum is open from 10 am until 5 pm Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 pm on Sunday. This is an amazingly affordable place to visit especially when compared to all that it offers. If you are in Wichita, Kansas, or
anywhere nearby then you need to make the effort to visit the Museum of World Treasures. You won't regret it and it might be the most interesting and fun museum you have ever visited. It will certainly be the most educational!
